Whole Fruit vs Standardized Extract: What Ayurveda Actually Prescribed

There is a new kind of haritaki marketing appearing online. It leads with a single number — the percentage of one compound, usually chebulic acid — and implies that a higher number means a better product. It's a clever pitch, because it sounds scientific. But it quietly replaces the question Ayurveda has asked about haritaki for two thousand years with a question that suits an extract manufacturer.

So let's ask the older question first: what did the tradition actually prescribe?

Haritaki in the classical texts

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) appears in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, and in nearly every later Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, as a whole dried fruit. It is the first of the three fruits of Triphala. The classical preparations are churna (the dried fruit ground to powder), decoctions of the whole fruit, and the fruit taken with different carriers according to season.

Nowhere does the tradition isolate one constituent and discard the rest. The idea would have made no sense to a vaidya. In Ayurveda, the fruit is understood as a complete substance — its taste profile (haritaki is famous for containing five of the six tastes), its post-digestive effect, and its potency all belong to the whole. Take one molecule out and you no longer have haritaki; you have an ingredient derived from it.

What a "standardized extract" is

A standardized extract is made by soaking the plant material in a solvent (water, ethanol, or a mix), concentrating the liquid, and drying it down. The manufacturer then adjusts the batch so that a chosen marker compound hits a target percentage. This is a legitimate way to make some products. But it comes with trade-offs that rarely make it into the ad copy:

  • You get what the solvent pulls, and lose what it doesn't. Fibre, less-soluble constituents, and the fruit's natural matrix are left behind.
  • Concentration usually involves heat. Evaporating solvent at scale is a thermal process. Standardizing a product to a heat-sensitive marker while using a heat-based extraction is an interesting engineering problem — and one worth asking a vendor about.
  • The marker is chosen for measurability, not necessarily for meaning. Chebulic acid is easy to assay. That is not the same as being the reason haritaki works.

What whole-fruit haritaki is

Whole-fruit haritaki is the dried fruit, seed removed, ground to a powder. That's it. At Kailash Herbals our fruit is ground at low temperature — the process is mechanical, not thermal, and nothing is extracted or added. What goes into the capsule is the same substance the classical texts describe.

Because it's the whole fruit, the constituent profile varies naturally from batch to batch, just as it does from tree to tree and season to season. A whole-fruit product that reported the identical chebulic acid percentage every time would be a red flag, not a reassurance.

How to think about the comparison

The honest framing is not "high chebulic acid vs low chebulic acid." It's "an extract standardized to one marker vs the whole fruit as traditionally prepared." Those are different products for different purposes, and a customer deserves to be told that plainly.

If what you want is the haritaki of the Ayurvedic tradition — the fruit that was carried across the Himalayas and prescribed by the great physicians of India — then the whole fruit, minimally processed, is the product that matches the description. That is what we make, and it is why we've never chased a single number.
